Who We Are and What We Do
Our staff consists of licensed professionals in the fields of psychology and social work and graduate students in either or both disciplines who provide services under the supervision of licensed staff.
We offer scheduled brief telephone consultation, assessment, crisis intervention, focused therapy, education/outreach, consultation, and referrals.
Attending college can be challenging as well as rewarding. Among the common issues with which our staff can help are:
- Managing time
- Improving academic performance
- Balancing work, school, and personal relationships
- Negotiating life-stage transitions and dilemmas
- Coping with anxiety and depression
- Working through loss and grief
- Resolving relationship difficulties
- Adapting to a new culture or country
- Recovering from trauma / responding to traumatic events
- Dealing with challenges associated with various social/cultural factors (such as being a person of color, identifying as LGBT, being the first-generation to attend college, etc.)
- Identifying and managing self-destructive behavioral patterns, including eating disorders and problems with alcohol and drug abuse
Our service approach is ecological: We recognize that our students come from diverse backgrounds and that their health and educational needs transcend individual factors and are impacted by surrounding cultural, institutional, socioeconomic, and political influences. We are committed to reaching students, including those from traditionally-under served groups, and providing programming to help the UMB community realize its full potential to be psychologically healthy and socially just.
Eligibility and Cost
Please note that you do not need to have the UMB school insurance to have a brief telephone screening or to seek assistance during a crisis on-campus during our hours of operation, as long as you are currently enrolled and have paid the University Health Service fee; however, students who have insurance other than the student insurance (Aetna/Chickering) and who require ongoing services will generally be referred to access care through their own carrier,

How to Contact Us
The first step for most students seeking UHS Counseling Center services is a brief telephone screening with one of our senior staff members. These telephone screenings are conducted, by appointment, generally between 11am and noon on weekdays. Please call 617-287-5690 before that time or stop by our office to schedule a time for your phone screening. The phone screening will probably be scheduled for the same day you call, or the next day if your request comes in after our screening period for the day has ended and/or there are no more available appointments. You will speak with a licensed clinician who will ask you some questions about you and your current concerns and provide options for addressing your needs.
For ongoing clients, you can schedule an appointment with your therapist either by calling the Counseling Center office at 617-287-5690 or by stopping by during our hours of operation. After hours, you can leave a message. Messages left after hours are returned during business hours on the following work day.
If you are experiencing an emergency and are on-campus during business hours, please call or come to the UHS Counseling Center right away. If you are experiencing an emergency on-campus after business hours, please contact Public Safety at 617-287-1212 from a cell phone or 911 from a campus phone. If you are off-campus, please go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital.
